However, an overemphasis on this particular threat can inadvertently eclipse other equally critical security concerns.

While this is a scenario that necessitates preparation, the attention it garners can sometimes overshadow other prevalent security risks. A balanced approach towards these various potential security issues is crucial to ensure that our churches remain safe havens.

Medical Emergencies: Medical emergencies are common occurrences that necessitate prompt and efficient response. Ensuring that your security team is trained in basic first aid and CPR can be a lifesaver.
Service Disruptions: Disruptions during service can range from minor disturbances to significant threats. Having a protocol for handling such disruptions ensures that order is maintained, and any threat is swiftly neutralized.
Mental Health Issues: Encounters with individuals facing mental health challenges can escalate if not handled with understanding and care. Training on how to interact with individuals experiencing mental distress can prevent potential conflicts.

Moreover, distractions like mobile phones or casual conversations can further dilute the focus.

As an example, my church conducts a “concealed carriers” meeting each year. There, we lay down our expectations of them in case of an incident. You’d be amazed at what some people think they are going to do in a critical incident (it is scary at times what people say they are going to do). Most people have not thought out what to do in a critical incident. This is your chance to tell them.
