Church Van Crash With Fatality, Funeral Shooting
The round up of crime this week at America's churches
Editor's Note
Thank you for tuning in to this week’s roundup of crime at churches. A number of churches, such as Presbyterian USA and the United Methodist Church, have recently made decisions that diverge from traditional biblical teachings, including the display of LGBTQ flags. This divergence has correlated with an increased number of crimes targeting these institutions. I will report on such incidents when they hold value for the greater Christian community. Please understand that this reporting does not indicate my acceptance of their positions. I firmly believe in adhering to the Bible and not to modern reinterpretations.
As 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NIV) reminds us: "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." Let us hold steadfast to the truth of God’s word in these challenging times.
Thank you for your understanding and continued readership.
CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS
Shooting at Bates Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville
A shooting incident occurred at Bates Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, leaving one person injured. The shooting took place on Lampton Street, outside the church, where an unidentified assailant opened fire. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are investigating the incident and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
When you have a funeral at your church, you should check on how the person died. If they died because of violence, and you believe they are part of a gang, you should expect that there could be reprisals at your church during the service. It is very common for the rival gang to do a drive-by of a church during a funeral, knowing that the entire rival gang will be there grieving. You can call the police to ask them to be present out front during the funeral. As a sergeant in charge of a gang unit, this was a normal task for us.
Man Arrested for Leaving Anti-LGBTQ Sign at New Hampshire Church
Isaac Santiago, 49, of Somersworth, New Hampshire, was arrested for leaving a sign with an anti-LGBTQ message at the First Parish Church in Dover on June 20. The sign, which read "Be saved today or you will perish in your sins!", was interpreted by police as a threatening message. Following an investigation, police executed a search warrant at Santiago's residence and subsequently obtained an arrest warrant. Santiago surrendered to police and is charged with criminal threatening, with the possibility of an extended prison term under the state's hate crime statute. His arraignment is scheduled for August 12 in Dover District Court.
First, this case doesn’t look good for Dover PD. I did a video break down of the incident that I think is worth watching. Just click the video above.
Man Charged After Incident at Church in Sevierville, Tennessee
A man has been charged following a disruptive incident at a church in Sevierville, Tennessee. The suspect, armed with a metal pole, entered the church during a service and caused a significant disturbance, alarming the congregation. Police were called to the scene, and the individual was apprehended without further incident. He now faces multiple charges, including assault and disorderly conduct. In response to the event, church officials are reviewing and strengthening security measures to ensure the safety of their members during services.
I think now is a good time for you to take my class on Use of Force. A metal pole can be a deadly weapon. You must determine if you are going to deescalate or use some type of force to protect your church. Make sure you make the right decision by taking this class.
Tennessee Pastor Shot in Face Speaks Out After Suspect’s Charges Dropped
A pastor in Tennessee, who was shot in the face, has spoken out following the unexpected dismissal of charges against the suspect. The pastor, who survived the violent attack, voiced his frustration and disappointment with the legal system's decision to drop the charges. The incident, which took place earlier this year, initially led to the arrest and charging of the suspect. However, the charges were later dismissed for unspecified legal reasons, leaving the pastor and his congregation seeking justice. Despite the setback, the pastor emphasized his faith and resilience, continuing to call for a thorough investigation.
I spoke about this case a few months ago after it happened (I gave some great pointers on what you can do if it happens to you). Pastor Clemmie has suffered greatly from this crime against him and his church. Unfortunately, more and more suspects have been going free in the past decade due to liberal prosecutors refusing to follow through on violent crime. I have experienced and seen this first hand. In this video, I have a link to Pastor Clemmie’s Go Fund Me. Please donate to him and his church. They could use some help right now.
Boise Women Arrested for Alleged Anti-Semitic Attack
Two women were arrested in downtown Boise, Idaho, on Thursday night for alleged felony malicious harassment following a confrontation with a Jewish man and his wife. The incident occurred near the corner of 8th and Idaho streets, where the man was wearing a Kippah, a traditional Jewish head covering. According to Boise police, the women made comments about the Mideast conflict, leading to an argument. One woman allegedly hit the man in the nose with her phone. Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar condemned the behavior, emphasizing that hate bias incidents are taken seriously to ensure community safety. The local pro-Palestinian group, Boise to Palestine, claimed the women were wrongfully arrested and were exercising free speech. The case is being contested as a First Amendment issue.
To my Treasure Valley readers…
This group, Boise to Palestine, has been very active lately including flying Hamas flags at the Cloverdale overpass. You might recognize this as the overpass with the American flags flying to honor the Mountain Home airmen that died there. I recommend you keep track of them in your intelligence analysis. I think they may be ready to visit some of our churches soon based on their behaviors.
Applications Open for Security Grants at Tennessee Houses of Worship
Tennessee has opened applications for security grants available to houses of worship across the state. The initiative aims to enhance security measures at religious institutions, providing funds for security equipment, training, and other protective measures. The grants are part of a broader effort to safeguard congregations in light of increasing concerns about safety and security at places of worship. Eligible institutions can apply for the grants to improve their security infrastructure and ensure a safer environment for their members.
SEX CRIMES
Former Wisconsin Youth Pastor Charged with Sexual Assault of a Minor
James Lane, a former youth pastor at Faith Reformed Church in Wisconsin Rapids, part of the Alliance of Reformed Churches, has been charged with repeated sexual assault of a child following a state investigation into clergy abuse in Wisconsin. Lane, now 52 and residing in Colorado, is accused of abusing a 14- and 15-year-old girl during 2002 and 2003. The victim, who had not previously reported the abuse, came forward through the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Clergy and Faith Leader Abuse Initiative. Lane admitted to having an "inappropriate" relationship with the victim. The investigation, launched by Attorney General Josh Kaul in 2021, has received nearly 250 reports of abuse. Lane's charges were facilitated by his relocation out of state, which paused the statute of limitations.
When you see something like this pop up, you should see if this person ever worked for your church. If they did, you’ll need to start contacting past students and congregants to see if there are any more victims. You can’t pretend nothing happened at your church and hope for the best. Be proactive and transparent.

Greater Grace Church to Investigate Handling of Sex Abuse Allegations
Greater Grace World Outreach in East Baltimore has committed to hiring an independent firm to investigate its response to child sexual abuse allegations and publicly share the findings. This decision follows a series of articles in The Baltimore Banner highlighting claims by former church members about past abuses and inadequate responses from church leaders. Pastor Robert Colban announced the church's plan, which is expected to take up to six months, and emphasized transparency and the need for a safe environment. The move came after a protest by survivors and supporters calling for accountability. Despite the church's promises, some groups, such as The Millstones, remain skeptical of its commitment to meaningful action.
It should never have come to this. Strong background checks, good policy that protects congregants and children, will prevent sexual abuse. If it does occur, the investigations shouldn’t happen years later. It should be immediate, swift and transparent.
N.J. Man Accused of Sexual Assault in Church Bathroom
A 68-year-old man from Plainfield, New Jersey, has been charged with sexually assaulting two children in separate incidents at a church in North Plainfield. Pierre Joseph was arrested on June 23 after a seven-year-old boy reported that Joseph followed him into the church bathroom, pulled down his pants, and touched him. During the investigation, a nine-year-old boy alleged a similar incident involving Joseph earlier in 2024. Joseph faces two counts of sexual assault on a minor and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently held in Somerset County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.
I’ve seen this more than once in our newsletter. Children should not be unaccompanied in the bathroom. Sexual predators are waiting for you to let your guard down.

PROPERTY CRIME
Vandals Strike Local Church Twice in One Week
In recent incidents, a church in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was targeted by vandals twice within a single week. According to local reports, the unidentified perpetrators caused significant damage, including breaking windows and spray-painting graffiti on the church's exterior. Church officials expressed their distress over the repeated attacks, emphasizing the impact on the community and their efforts to maintain a safe, welcoming environment. Authorities are investigating the incidents and have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in identifying the vandals.
A burglar alarm is a must have. It will alert law enforcement that a break in has occurred or that doors/window are being tampered with. A 4k video system will help law enforcement find the perpetrators and help in prosecution/restitution when they are caught. I’m not sure why churches are so resistant to these two essential items.
Tacoma Man Charged with Burglary Following Church Break-In
A Tacoma man has been charged with burglary after breaking into a church in Tacoma, Washington. The incident, which occurred last week, involved the suspect forcibly entering the church and stealing several valuable items, including electronic equipment. Local police apprehended the suspect shortly after the break-in, and he now faces multiple charges related to the burglary. Church officials reported the damages and theft to authorities and are assessing the financial impact of the incident on their operations.
Say it with me, “We will get a burglar alarm, fire alarm and a 4k video system for our church.”
Statue of Jesus Decapitated in Attack Outside Queens Church
A statue of Jesus was decapitated in a disturbing act of vandalism outside a church in Queens, New York. The incident, discovered by parishioners earlier this week, has shocked the local community and prompted an investigation by the New York Police Department. Church officials expressed their dismay over the attack, which they described as a desecration of their place of worship. Authorities are reviewing security footage to identify the perpetrator and have called on the public to provide any information that might aid in the investigation.
I have been monitoring what appears to be more church related crime in NYC. It may because there is better coverage by the news there or because of the population there, but followers in NYC should be extra cautious in light of recent events. It seems your city is making this newsletter every other week.

Demolition Plans for Texas Church Where 2017 Mass Shooting Occurred
Plans to demolish the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs in Texas, where a gunman killed 26 worshippers in 2017, have drawn visitors and sparked a last-minute push to stop the demolition. Although church leaders have not announced a demolition date, a Texas judge approved a temporary restraining order to delay it. Some families of the victims are seeking to prevent the demolition, arguing they should have a say in the decision. The sanctuary, which was turned into a memorial, might still be demolished despite the ongoing legal battle.
Montclair Church Receives Bomb Threat During Library Event
A bomb threat disrupted an event at a church-hosted library in Montclair, New Jersey, prompting an evacuation and a police investigation. The threat was reported during a community event held within the church's library facilities. Police responded swiftly, ensuring the safety of all attendees and searching the premises. No explosive devices were found, and the investigation into the source of the threat is ongoing. Church officials have expressed their concern and are cooperating fully with authorities to ensure such incidents do not recur.
These events occur more than you think. Most bombers never call in their bomb, they just let it blow up. A majority are false reports. With that said, the best person to see if there is a bomb present is the person that is in that facility the most. Have your employees check immediately in their work areas for suspicious devices, packages or anything out of the ordinary. Call the police and report what you have or have not found.
Church Van Crash Leaves Multiple Teens Injured, 15-Year-Old Dies
A tragic accident on a Georgia highway has left multiple teens injured and claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy after a driver ran a red light and collided with a church van carrying nine members of River Point Community Church in Demorest. The crash occurred at the intersection of Demorest Mt. Airy Highway and GA 365. The 15-year-old, who was airlifted to Children’s Egleston Hospital in Atlanta, has since passed away. The driver of the SUV, Barry Clark, was found to be under the influence and has been charged. The church members were returning from a community service project, and the local community is mourning the loss and supporting the injured teens and their families.
With all of the summer activities in full swing at church, now is a good time to ensure your drivers are properly licensed for the vehicle they are driving, that you have checked their driving record, your insurance covers them and the vehicle is in good working order. I suggest an inspection of the vehicle on each trip that includes a checklist to remind the driver of what to look for. Please remember that large passenger vans may require a commercial license.

Christian Man Sentenced to Death for Blasphemy in Pakistan
A court in Bahawalpur, Punjab province, Pakistan, has sentenced 22-year-old Christian Noman Masih to death for allegedly sharing blasphemous content via WhatsApp. Masih was accused under Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws, which mandate the death penalty for defiling the name of the Prophet Muhammad. The charges stemmed from a complaint by a rival shop owner, with whom Masih had a prior altercation. Masih denies the allegations, asserting he never disrespected the Prophet.
This is a good reminder for missionaries to be careful about what is said and what they post online while in countries like Pakistan.

Methodist Church Members Abandon Service After Attack on Bishop in Liberia
In Ganta, Nimba County, Liberia, members of the United Methodist Church abandoned their Sunday service following an attack on Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire. The attack occurred due to his stance against disassociating from the global United Methodist Church after it overturned its ban on gay clergy. Bishop Quire faced opposition for not aligning the Liberian church with the local members' calls to reject the global body's acceptance of same-sex marriage. The incident has led to vows from church officials to hold the attackers accountable and prevent future disruptions within the church community.
I don’t agree with the Methodist church either, but it is not up to us to punish them. That is reserved for God. We can leave that church, and we should, but we shouldn’t be threatening anyone. We should be educating those that act sinfully.

Christian Man Sentenced to Death for Blasphemy in Pakistan
A Pakistani court sentenced a Christian man to death for posting content deemed hateful towards Muslims on social media, following a severe mob attack on Christians in Punjab province last year. The incident in August 2023 saw Muslim men burn homes and churches in Jaranwala after allegations of Quran desecration by two Christian men, who were arrested. Ehsan Shan, although not involved in the desecration, was accused of sharing the content on TikTok. His lawyer plans to appeal the verdict issued in Sahiwal. The case highlights Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws, under which even accusations can provoke violent outbreaks.
Cleric Abducted by Gunmen in Ondo, Nigeria
In Ondo, Nigeria, a cleric was abducted by unidentified gunmen, sparking widespread concern and a police investigation. The abduction occurred last week, with the assailants reportedly storming the cleric's residence and forcibly taking him away.
